Activity:
Patience can be hard! Waiting until later for something you want now, seems like a lifelong learning process for everyone. This month, as a family, learn together how patience can pay off. This month’s craft is worth the wait for beautiful homegrown crystals. With a few supplies from your own and the cleaning supply aisle, you can make this enchanting craft.

Supplies
½ cup Borax
3 cups boiling water
Food coloring
Pipe Cleaners*
Thin Ribbon or String*
Popsicle Sticks*
Mason Jar*
Scissors

Instructions

Take a pipe cleaner and bend, twist, and mold to create the shape you like. Have fun with this and create interesting shapes. You can’t go wrong.

Then tie a piece of thin ribbon or string from your shaped pipe cleaner.

Hang the string over a popsicle stick, and dangle the pipe cleaner inside a 2 cup mason jar. You can grow two crystals in one jar.

(Stove Warning! Adults should perform this step) Boil a pot of water.

Mix the Borax, a few drops of food coloring, and boiling water until the borax is completely dissolved.

And then pour it into the mason jars until the tops of the stars are covered. The crystals will grow on the ribbon as well, so don’t recommend filling the jars completely.

Repeat the process if you want to grow multiple crystals.

Wait 24 hours and check, you should have crystals! Remove, pat dry with a paper towel, and you’re done!
